Step 1 - Practice for the written Motor Vehicle Division test
Get familiar with the basic driving rules and regulations and learn important defensive driving techniques by taking our interactive drivers ed course online. If you choose not to take our entire course, you can take Practice Tests Online.
These tests are designed to get you familiar with the language and format of DOT, Department of Transportation practice tests. The first test is FREE! To learn the state-specific regulations, please refer to your State Driver’s Handbook.
Please remember that you are responsible for knowing the rules and regulations before you take the Driver Licensing Services test.
Step 2 - Scheduling the MVD appointment (Optional)
In order to save time, call a Driver's License field office near you and make an appointment to take the written test
Step 3 - What to bring and what to expect at the MVD office
Be prepared and bring identification documents, as well as:
* Be 15 years and 7 months old.
* Proof of identification including proof of date of birth and legal presence. To see the acceptable document list, check out the “Identification and Proof of Age” topic in the Driver Manual.
* Pay the fee of $7.00.
* Pass a medical and vision screening examinations.
* Pass a written examination. One application fee allows you 3 attempts to pass the test in a 12-month period.
Step 4 - Upon completion of the DMV written test
You will be issued a Class G (Graduated) Instruction Permit. This Permit is valid for one year. You must be accompanied by a class A, B, C or D licensed driver, who occupies the seat beside you. This permit is valid for 12 months.
Step 5 - Taking the Driving Test
To be eligible to take your driving test you must:
* Be at least 16 years old.
* An applicant who is under 18 years of age must have had a valid instruction permit for at least 5 months before they can be issued a license.
* A parent or legal guardian must sign the legal guardian section on the driver license application.
* An applicant must also have satisfactorily completed an Arizona driver education program approved by MVD or the parent or guardian must certify in writing that the applicant has completed at least 25 hours of supervised driving practice, including at least 5 hours at night.
* Driving tests are given at permanent driver license offices and may require an appointment.
Vehicle proof of liability insurance must be presented when you check in for your road test appointment
Step 6 - After the Driving Test
* Upon passing the road test, the applicant will be issued a new Class G (Graduated) License.
* With a Class G Driver License, you are able to drive anywhere, with anyone in the car, at anytime of the day or night (within curfew applicable by city code), and a licensed driver is not required to be in the car with you.
When you turn 18 years you will be eligible for Class D operator license.
